Once a homeowner has qualified for a homestead exemption on their residence the exemption remains in effect as long as their status has not changed. A property owner does not have to reapply each year for their homestead exemption.
Periodically, the Chief Appraiser may request homeowners reapply for the homestead exemption. This is done to insure property owners are receiving all qualifying exemptions they are entitled to and to keep appraisal district records current. If the Chief Appraiser requests that a new homestead application be filled out, the homeowner must reapply to retain their exemption.
